Ananda Mahidol (20 September 1925--9 June 1946) was the eighth monarch of Thailand under the House of Chakri. He was recognized as king by the National Assembly in March 1935. He was a nine-year-old boy living in Switzerland at this time. He returned to Thailand in December 1945. He was found shot to death in his bed in June 1946. Medical examiners ruled it a murder and three servants were later executed. His killing has been the subject of much controversy. Ananda Mahidol (Thai: อานันทมหิดล) is one word in Thai and is his given name. King Vajiravhud, his uncle, sent a telegram on 13 October 1925 giving him this name. It is pronounced "Ananta Mahidon" and means "the joy of Mahidol" (his father). When he held his birth rank of "mom chao" -- the lowest rank of Thai princes -— he used the surname of "Mahidol", his father's given name. His full name and title was thus, "Mom Chao Ananda Mahidol Mahidol" (Thai: หม่อมเจ้า อานันทมหิดล มหิดล). His full royal name was, "Phra Bat Somdet Phra Poramentharamaha Ananda Mahidol Phra Atthama Ramathibodindara" (Thai: พระบาทสมเด็จพระปรเมนทรมหาอานันทมหิดลฯ พระอัฐมรามาธิบดินทร); RTGS: —Ananthamahidon Phra Atthamaramathibodin), or Rama VIII.

Mit seiner Frau Sirikit, die das vormalige Siam einst als schönste Königin der Welt über alle Grenzen hinaus bekannt machte, setzt er sich unermüdlich zum Wohle seiner Untertanen ein. Wie in keinem anderen Land wird der Monarch dafür von seinem Volk verehrt. Kritik am König ist tabu, wird als Majestätsbeleidigung sogar strafrechtlich verfolgt. Der Verfassung nach ist Thailand seit den dreißiger Jahren eine konstitutionelle Monarchie. Der König hat zwar nur wenige Exekutivrechte, doch niemand würde einem seiner Wünsche widersprechen. Bhumibol Adulyadej hatte bei seinem Amtsantritt 1946 nicht viel mit Thailand und dem Königshaus gemein: Geboren als Sohn eines Arztes adeliger Herkunft und einer Krankenschwester bürgerlicher Herkunft, wuchs er in Boston und Lausanne auf. In der Thronfolge war er weit abgeschlagen, doch eine Reihe erbkrankheitsbedingter Todesfälle führte dazu, dass die Krone 1935 plötzlich auf Bhumibols neunjährigen Bruder Ananda überging. Das Buch "Der Strand" von Alex Garland erschien 1996 über eine abenteuerliche Rucksackreise, beides hat einen touristischen Boom unter jungen Leuten in das Land des Lächelns -Thailand - ausgelöst. Allerdings hat sich sehr viel in dieser Straße und erst recht seit dem Tsunami in Thailand getan. Die Khaosan bestand anfangs aus den kleinen typischen einstöckigen Holzhäusern und vielen Ständen auf der Straße. Mittlerweile gibt es dort sehr viele Shopping-Center mit Air Condition, die Stände sind weitgehendst verschwunden. Jeder in Bangkok kennt den Weg dorthin - dort ist der Treffpunkt der Rucksacktouristen aus aller Welt. Afro Celt Sound System - LIve @ WOMAD, Charlton Park 25th July 2010
A night of magic as Afro Celt Sound System return to a WOMAD stage after a gap of some 10 years, and what a show. This clip just doesn't do justice to the atmosphere in the Siam Tent, this was without doubt the highlight of the weekend for me. Their new re-mastered and re-mixed double CD is excellent, to be formally released in early September 2010, well worth the investment imo.
